The Tory Grandee said Britain 'needs to get politics out of civil society'

Lord Frost has attacked Labour over their response to the debanking scandal as he questioned why the party was "backing big businesses over normal people".

The Tory grandee said it has been an "open secret" that those "on the right" have found it difficult to get a bank account.

It comes after Nigel Farage’s account with Coutts was closed earlier this month after the bank said they no longer wanted him as a customer.

A 40-page dossier revealed Coutts chiefs made a concerted effort to “exit” him as a customer as they didn’t believe the former Ukip leader aligned with their views.

Speaking to Dan Wootton about Labour's response to the scandal, he said: "What was so revealing about those comments yesterday is that it shows what Labour does instinctively.

"In the end, Keir Starmer had to come in a very grudgingly, well, there is a point of principle here. But he could see how much damage was being done.

"And then what this has revealed is just how thin the commitment of Labour to free speech really is.

"They could not bring themselves to acknowledge that there was a point of principle involved here. I mean, when did it happen that the Labour Party suddenly became the supporters of business, big business against the rights of ordinary people in this country?

"I didn't think that's what the Labour Party was set up to do, but that's what they've become."

He added: "It was an open secret, I think that people on the right found it difficult to get bank accounts and we just heard a bit about that.

"But we all know that it's very difficult if you hold certain opinions. I mean try and get a job in the university, if you are on the right, for example, or anywhere in the public sector, you have to pay lip service to this what's becoming a state ideology and that is just wrong.

"We need to get politics out of civil society and allow people to speak as they wish once again."

His comments come after Anti-Brexit campaigner Gina Miller claims to be the latest high profile figure to be targeted by debanking.

The businesswoman opened a Monzo account for her True and Fair party in November 2021 but received an email this month saying it would be closed in September.

It follows claims by a disabled former police officer that his NatWest bank account was closed without warning and refused to explain why.

GB News presenter Farage is set to launch a new website to help people who have been debanked.
